Not having enough time is probably the number one excuse for not cleaning your makeup brushes as often as you should, right? Well, there’s no time like the present (especially when you’re in isolation). Here’s everything you need to know.

1 How often should you wash your brushes?
Ideally, weekly – sounds like a lot but trust us, your skin will thank you for it. If you don’t do it often enough, grime, make-up and bacteria quickly build up (you’re putting these on your face, remember). The dirt can cause breakouts and clogged pores.
-
2 What should you use to clean them?
There’s loads of specific brush cleaners you can buy but you don’t need to, a gentle shampoo works just as well. When you’re washing them, make sure the water is lukewarm – hot water will mess with the glue and you’ll start to lose bristles.
-
3 How do you wash them?
One brush at a time – place it under running water to dampen the bristles, squeeze a pea-sized amount of shampoo into the palm of your hand and work the brush into it to lather it up. Work the shampoo into the bristles and then rinse until the water is clean and there’s no bubbles. Simple.
-
4 How do you dry them?
While the bristles are still wet, reshape them to how the brush normally looks (that bit is important). Lay the brush flat – so they can dry in the right shape – and leave them to dry overnight – or near a radiator if want to speed it up.
